Alert
As of midnight, December 20, 2024, the U.S. government is experiencing a lapse in appropriations. Until the situation is resolved, please refer to OPM.gov website regarding the status for federal employees. We expect the U.S. Antarctic Program to remain operational under our contractor for the foreseeable future. Should the situation change, we will post additional information on this website when it is legally permissible to do so.

Merit Review Phase

The first phase in the science planning process is the Merit Review. There are two annual deadlines to be aware of when proposing Antarctic science.  Proposals requiring Antarctic fieldwork must submit a Concept Outline by January 15 of every year and the full proposal deadline for Antarctic science is June 1 of every year. The official funding opportunity proposal can be found at the Antarctic Research Requiring USAP Support for Field Work page. The proposal must include information related to proposed fieldwork and must account for the logistical planning necessary to support that fieldwork.

After receipt of proposals, NSF conducts the merit review according to the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide.

Proposals that are well-reviewed through the merit review process are collated by the NSF Antarctic Sciences Section completing Phase 1 and passed to the Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics Section to begin Phase 2 Logistics Assessment.

For more detailed information about NSF funding, see the About the U.S. National Science Foundation section of the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide on the NSF website.
