Julie Palais, who served at NSF for more than 26 years and was, prior to her retirement in 2016, OPP’s Antarctic glaciology program manager, was presented with the International Glaciological Society’s Richardson Medal at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union this week in Washington D.C.

The medal is awarded “from time to time in recognition of outstanding service contributions to the International Glaciological Society and to glaciology,” according to the IGS: https://www.igsoc.org/awards/richardson/

In citing her contributions to the field (https://www.igsoc.org/awards/richardson/palais.html), the IGS noted that the “glaciology and ice core science communities have produced groundbreaking discoveries that would not have been possible without the insightful and steadfast advocacy of Dr Palais through her service at the National Science Foundation."

She is only the 12th recipient since the award was instituted in 1993.
