Continuing a tradition that dates to the International Geophysical Year, President Donald J. Trump has issued an annual message of congratulations and encouragement to researchers and support personnel, on the Southern Hemisphere's shortest day:

"I send greetings to the researchers and personnel of the United States Antarctic Program and the scientists from around the world celebrating Midwinter’s Day in Antarctica.

While today marks the shortest and darkest day in Antarctica, it is also an opportunity for you, our intrepid researchers, to gather in fellowship and commemorate the midpoint of your personal and professional experiences during the Antarctic winter. By devoting months to advancing human knowledge in fields ranging from astronomy to geophysics, you carry forward an honored tradition dating back to the earliest days of polar exploration.

Thank you for your dedication to advancing scientific inquiry. Our Nation wishes you a fulfilling and productive austral winter season and a happy Midwinter’s Day."

Sincerely,Donald J. Trump
